Welcome to the website. You are the reason I do it.
A 1975 graduate of Ryerson University, Bachelor of Applied Arts Journalism, I’ve spent 39 years in the news business, beginning at a small weekly newspaper The Enterprise in Iroquois Falls, Ont., then the Peterborough Examiner as city editor, the Waterloo Region Record as award-winning labour writer and municipal affairs columnist, before moving to the nation’s capital in 1988 as municipal affairs reporter.
In Kitchener-Western Ontario I won a lot of awards I do not normally mention — which is why I steadfastly declined entering journalism contests since arriving in Ottawa in 1988. In my old life, I received top gala awards for columnist (twice); labour reporting (one); investigative news (twice); business (twice); which is when I discovered most journalism trophies do not serve the public, per se, but mainly the employers (and, more insidious, the special interest groups who sponsor and capitalize on the awards).
I try to be up-front.
I’ve been an investigative reporter at Ottawa City Hall, then Parliament Hill before taking over as Food editor at the Ottawa Citizen in 1998, an enviable position held 14 years before accepting a voluntary buyout in August 2012.
My original, and proudly iconoclastic blog Omnivore’s Ottawa was launched on the Citizen website in 2008, which was surprisingly successful from the outset as I brought journalistic (and, sometimes, investigative) skills to Food coverage that used to be focused mainly on seasonal vegetables and fruit.
I went into the kitchens to meet chefs providing our wonderful food, and to farms to witness how growers, ranchers and poultry people work so hard to deliver the bounty of our fertile land. I made friends with the local culinary academic community, to better understand and appreciate tomorrow’s up-and-coming talented chefs.
It has been a most exciting ride, one I hope to continue as I venture independently in this blog, www.roneade.com.
I invite you to join me in this Celebration of Incredible Edibles. It is my passion, and one I am excited to share with food lovers and, of course, Ottawa’s world-class culinary community — and beyond.
Forks ready? Let’s dig in.
